Description:
This course is for those with an interest in how people interact with each other and with society. Studying sociology enables you to analyse society and to assess and evaluate sociological theories and methods. Sociology involves identifying and analysing inequalities and social diversity. Its theories range from the classical to the post modern. At AS Level, we study topics such as families and households, education and research methods. At A2 the topics include world sociology, religion, theory and methods and finally, crime and deviance. The assessment varies from 'short answer' to essay style questions. Some units are assessed by examination but at some campuses it might be possible to take optional coursework for research methods.
Progression:
Higher education; sociology is also a useful qualification for all 'people' professions including nursing, teaching, social work, counselling, police, personnel, media/journalism, marketing, the civil service, management, law and criminology. The research skills which are taught in sociology can be applied to any area where primary or secondary research is needed.
