Sport (Development, Coaching & Fitness) National Diploma
This popular course balances theory with practical application to provide the skills and knowledge required for a career in the sport industry. The course will appeal to those who actively participate in sport and have an interest in the aspects surrounding and supporting performance in sport. The course covers a wide range of themes and concepts, from the scientific to the sociological and from the psychological to the nutritional. All units are directly related to the needs and requirements of employers in specific areas of the sport and leisure industries. A BTEC National Diploma qualification is directly equivalent to three A-levels and offers a good opportunity for progression to Higher Education (HE) or employment.

Course Content:
The course is made up of 18 units, consisting of four core units and four compulsory specialist units which all students must take, and a further 10 specialist units of your own choice. Core units: These units are fundamental to your programme of study:
  • Sport in society
  • The reflective practitioner (evaluation of yourself in respect of your performance, leading to target setting and action planning for improvement)
  • Ethics and values in sport
  • Health and safety in sport
  • Specialist pathway units (Group A) These mandatory units allow you to specialise in sports development and fitness. They offer the opportunity to apply practical skills and sporting knowledge in a variety of realistic situations:
    • Psychology for sport performance
    • Practical sports study (individual) or Practical sports study (team)
    • Voluntary sports clubs
    • Work experience
    Specialist pathway units (Group B) These units enable you to study particular areas in more depth. Students choose ten units from the following list:
    • The body in action
    • Nutrition for weight management
    • Sports massage and therapy
    • Fitness testing
    • Training and fitness
    • Principles of coaching
    • Enterprise in sport
    • Working with children
    • Sports development
    • Practical sports study (individual) or Practical sports study (team)
    • Special populations
    Key Skills:
    All students will have the opportunity to work towards each of three Basic/Key Skills (Communication, Application of Number and Information Technology).

    Awarding body:
    Edexcel.

    Work Experience / Practical Experience:
    Work experience and visits (including one overseas) are integral to the course. Practical study, as individuals and in teams, is also a key factor in students developing an understanding of this vocational area.

    Attendance Requirements:
    Full-time. Details regarding expected course timetable and attendance will be given at interview, if available.

      Entry Process:
      All applicants will be invited to an interview with the tutor, allowing you to find out more and check that the course is the best option for you. Interviews normally take place between January and September of the year in which the course starts.

      Assessment:
      Assessment is continuous and comprises assignments, written and practical tests, projects and work experience. 'Sport in Society' and 'Ethics and Values in Sport' are externally set and marked by EDEXCEL through an 'Integrated Vocational Assignment'.

      Progression Routes:
      Progression to Higher Education.

      Career Options:
      Employment as a Sports Coach, Fitness Instructor, Leisure Assistant, PE Teacher or Leisure Manager.
