Sport & Leisure Introductory Diploma
These new qualifications have been designed to provide an introduction to the sport and leisure industries. Students are encouraged to develop the personal skills, qualities and understanding required for progression to higher level courses and thereafter employment within these industries. BTEC Introductory courses are intended as practical hands on programmes that provide the chance to explore the opportunities offered by the real environment of sport and leisure. Teaching therefore focuses on practical assignments that reflect realistic workplace situations.

Course Content:
Both courses will provide opportunities for students to experience both theoretical and practical aspects of the industry and gain knowledge of various subjects. Students will learn through a mixture of theoretical and practical work, including practical sessions, classroom sessions, group work, field visits and work experience. The Introductory Certificate comprises four units, while the Introductory Diploma goes into more depth with eight units. Both courses include core units, Personal Skills units and optional units. The subjects covered are outlined below. Core units BTEC Introductory Diploma students take all of the following three units. Students following the BTEC Introductory Certificate programme will take two (as indicated).
  • Starting work in sport and leisure
  • Working in Sport and Leisure (Diploma only)
  • The healthy body
  • Personal skills units
BTEC Introductory Diploma students choose two of the following units. Students following the BTEC Introductory Certificate programme will choose one.
  • Personal effectiveness
  • Social responsibility at work
  • Financial management
Optional units: These units enable you to study particular areas in more depth. BTEC Introductory Diploma students choose three of the following units. Students following the BTEC Introductory Certificate programme will choose one.
  • Organising a sport or leisure event
  • Issues in sport and leisure
  • Taking part in sport
  • Introducing customer service
  • Students will also have the opportunity to achieve a First Aid Certificate and a Coaching
  • / Sports leadership badge.

    Awarding body:
    Edexcel.

    Attendance Requirements:
    Full-time. Details regarding expected course timetable and attendance will be given at interview, if available.

Entry Process:
All applicants will be invited to an interview with the tutor, allowing you to find out more and check that the course is the best option for you. Interviews normally take place between January and September of the year in which the course starts.

Assessment:
Students will be assessed via projects and external assignments based on realistic workplace activities. The Starting work in sport and leisure and Working in sport and leisure units are assessed using an externally set Project Assessment.

Progression Routes:
Students successfully completing these courses may choose to progress to a Level 2 course, such as the BTEC First Diploma in Sport offered by the College.

Career Options:
The combination of work-related knowledge and practical skills offered by these courses can open doors to employment within the industry in roles such as coaching assistant, fitness industry assistant and leisure and sport centre assistant.
