Full Time AS Level Communication and Culture Studies

Course Description:
Programme Aims Communication and Culture AS will focus on a dynamic area of study with a strong contemporary orientation, enabling students to relate their own life experiences to academic debates. Course Content In the first year, you will study AS level Communication and Culture, which comprises two modules and is half the full A level. In the second year, you will study another two modules which lead to the full A level. AS COMMUNICATION AND CULTURE Examination comprises two modules: Unit 1: Understanding Communication and Culture Subject content: The nature of culture Definitions of culture The meanings and practices of everyday life High culture and popular culture The relationship between culture and value Verbal and non-verbal communication Identity and self-presentation Group communication Reading Images and products One hour 45 minute written examination 50% of total AS marks, 25% of total A Level marks. Marked externally by AQA Unit 2: The Individual and Contemporary Culture: Portfolio A piece of independent work Consists of three pieces of work: an Investigation, Exploration and Presentation. General topics are set by AQA but students choose a specific area of interest to them for all three elements. Coursework marked by course tutor and moderated by AQA 50% of total AS marks, 25% of total A Level marks A2 COMMUNICATION AND CULTURE Examination comprises two modules: Unit 3: Communicating Culture This unit builds upon the knowledge and understanding developed in Units 1 and 2 and also provides a conceptual underpinning for Unit 4. Content: There are three components: Theoretical approaches including Critical Society Theory, Feminism and Postmodernism. Key concepts including Ideology, Power, Mode of Address, Discourse, Identity, Narrative, Technology. Sites of Culture for example Spaces and Places, Fictions and Objects of desire. 2 hour written examination 25% of total A level marks Unit 4: Communication and Culture in Practice: Portfolio A Major piece of independent work, the focus of which will be prompted each year by AQA with a choice of alternative topics. These topics are selected from two sites (The Person and Cultural Practice) Internally examined and externally moderated 25% of total A level marks. This unit is only available in the June series of examinations Students will be supplied with booklets specially compiled for the course, take part in small group activities, whole group discussions, individual activities, computer based support materials from AQA, personal practical research work.

Assessment and Progression:
Assignments and tests are set frequently, as well as mock examinations at the appropriate times. Examinations are held in January and June. Communication and Culture can be studied at University and would be an asset in a wide ranging number of careers such as social work, teaching, human resources, advertising, the media, marketing, public relations, hospitality, customer care or any occupation which involves working with or dealing with people. It would also be a valuable A level to have for students who wish to enter the workplace straight after college.

Duration:
One year for AS Level; a further one year for A2.
