Course Content

The full NVQ 1 qualification provides an introduction to the hairdressing industry covering the role of assisting stylists in the workplace.

Course Features

The course is full time consisting of two days and one evening in college, with work experience on an additional day.

Work experience is an integral part of the programme, which all students must follow.

Extra curriculum activities include fashion shows, competitions and industrial events.

Experience or qualifications are not essential to undertake this qualification. However there will be an interview and selection process carried out for acceptance of suitable candidates.

A hairdressing kit and uniform are a compulsory requirement for the course which costs approximately #250, and must be paid for prior to course commencement.

There are six key skills areas which are integrated within the vocation Communication Application of number Information technology Working with others Improve your own learning performance Problem solving.

RIPH qualification (salon hygiene certificate) is included in the programme.

This course also offers progression on to the Hairdressing NVQ Level 2 Welsh Baccalaureate intermediate route.

On completion of the course successful candidates will have a follow up interview to establish suitability for the hairdressing NVQ level 2 programme.
Career Prospects and Progression

Introduction to Hairdressing and Assistants Role. Progressional route to hairdressing NVQ Level 2, or an apprenticeship role within a salon.

6 Unit Qualifications G1 Health and Safety G2 Assist with Salon Reception Duties G3 Contribute to the development of effective working. H1 Shampoo and condition hair. H2 Assist with the perming and colouring services. H5 Preparation of hairdressing services and work areas. Work experience is an essential part of this course.

Method of Assessment

Continuous assessment through observations of practical work on paying clients, assignments and written tests.
