Course Content

Course Features

Gelli Aur is recognised as a Centre of Excellence for Agriculture Education and is the only provider of this Level 3 Qualification in West Wales. It has UCAS points tariff and the top grade that could be achieved, a DDD (triple distinction) is equivalent to 360 UCAS points.

The campus has excellent modern teaching facilities and is sited on the college farm which makes access to practicals very easy.

The course covers all aspects of agriculture . This includes working with livestock, grassland, forage crops and machinery.
Career Prospects and Progression

Successful completion of the National Diploma will qualify students for entry to HNC/ HND or Degree courses in related subjects. This course also prepares you for the practical needs of the farming industry. There are numerous careers which this course could prepare you for: Farm Manager, Shepherd, Relief Milker, Shearer, Production and Distribution of Feeds and Seeds, Sales and Product Marketing ,Welsh Assembly Government, Animal Health Officers, Nutritionist, and many more involved in the food industry.

There are 18 units: Core Units: - Principles of Plant & Soil Science, Investigative Project Study, Business Management, Industry Experience. Additional Units Studied: Breeding and Nutrition, Agricultural Livestock Production, Estate Skills, Farm Habitat Management, Organic Production, Business Planning, Livestock Management, Dairy Production, Beef Production, Sheep Production, Animal Health, Grassland Production and Utilization, Forage Crop Production, Machinery Operations Other Units: - Agriculture and the Environment - Organic Production - Business Planning - Animal Health - Forage Crop Production - Sheep Production - Beef Production - Livestock Management - Dairy Production - Grass Crop Production - Machinery Operations

Method of Assessment

Assignments, end of unit tests, case studies, practical and oral assessments.

Course Length

Four days a week Tue to Friday for 2 Years. Within the two years, there are two periods of work placement. In the first year you will be out for four weeks during the spring term. The second year placement involves 10 weeks in the summer term.
