This course is designed to help you enter the furniture industry at many levels. It is suitable for both young people and mature students looking for a change in career. Successful candidates can enter the furniture industry as cabinet makers and wood machinists, or become self employed makers.

The focus of the course is to develop the practical woodworking skills necessary to produce high quality work, together with a good understanding of design and of the furniture industry.

·         Portable power tools techniques

·         Traditional and modern cabinet making: joints, construction and fittings

·         Furniture design and history of furniture

·         Industrial studies

What qualifications will I get?

Yr 1 – City & Guilds 5780-01 - Level 1 Certificate in Furniture Making
Yr 2 - City & Guilds 5780-22 - Level 2 Wood Machining Diploma
Yr 2 - City & Guilds 5780-20 - Level 2 Diploma in Furniture Making

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is via a portfolio of work produced during the course, timed assessment pieces question papers and short essays.

What is the entry process?

Fill in an application form and you will be invited in for an interview.

What are the entry requirements?

Minimum qualifications: Level 1

2 GCSE at grade D or above, but an interest and a commitment to working with wood to produce high quality furniture will be taken into consideration.

What else do I need to know?

As the course progresses from samples to complete pieces, there will be a charge for the cost of the materials of the items produced.

English and Maths

English and maths qualifications are vitally important for future employers and universities, so the government has made it a priority for students to improve these skills.

Entry Level / Level 1 and Level 2: We’re here to help you on your journey, so if you do not achieve grade A*-C in GCSE English and/or maths, then you will study English and/or maths as part of your college course.

Students who achieve a D grade will be placed on the relevant GCSE programme, while students who achieve an E or below will be assessed to ensure they are placed on the right study programme for their ability.

Level 3 programmes: You will need to meet the course entry requirements specified on the course information above. For the majority of our Level 3 courses, students will need grade A*-C in GCSE English and/or maths. If this is not specified in the course entry requirement, then you may be able to study English and/or maths as part of your college course.

What can I do after this course?

On successful completion of this course you will be able to seek employment in the furniture industry as a cabinet maker, fitter or wood machinist and many other woodwork related careers. Alternatively, there will be opportunities to progress onto the Level 3 City & Guilds Furniture Design & Making course

All students may be charged for materials e.g. equipment, clothing etc.
