The course is designed for people with an interest in woodworking as a hobby, or that are exploring the possibility of taking up furniture making as a career. The aim of the course is to provide the students with a range of basic skills to be able to satisfactorily undertake small projects.

The students will proceed through a series of structured exercises to master basic skills in hand and power techniques. As their ability progresses they will move on to a simple item of furniture (usually a small table) or to projects of their own design at the tutor’s discretion.

Successful candidates will be able to progress to the Furniture Workshop (Intermediate/Advanced) or to the day time Furniture Craft Courses.

What qualifications will I get?

N/A

How will I be assessed?

Ongoing practical observation. It is expected that students will be able to complete some simple items of furniture (e.g. a small table).

What are the entry requirements?

Minimum qualifications:

There are no formal entry requirements but an interest in working with wood to produce simple furniture.

What else do I need to know?

Students will be expected to purchase their own timber - to be discussed with tutor/technician (second hand timber will not be accepted due to the danger it could cause to the equipment). You are advised not to purchase any equipment until the course viability is confirmed.
