Games Art BTEC Extended Diploma Location Start Date Day Time Fees Duration Leamington Sep-2016 Mon, Thu and Fri 09:15 - 16:00 * see below 2Year(s) What will I study?

The BTEC Extended Diploma in Art & Design (Games Art) is a two year, level 3 course that aims to introduce students to the wide variety of creative disciplines that go in to making a computer game. Primarily aimed at those with strong art skills, the course will develop students’ understanding of game art, including 2d digital painting, 3d modelling and games design, via computer based workshop sessions, seminars, lectures and individual research tasks.

Students will undertake a variety of design briefs that allow them to explore many different areas of Game art and design, including character design, 3D animation, 2D graphics and game theory. In addition to the more technical aspects of the course there are regular lessons covering traditional drawing and painting techniques such as life / observational drawing and sculpture, colour theory and composition, which develop the essential underpinning skills required by those hoping for a career as a games artist.

In addition to this, students are also taken through projects that will encourage their understanding of character development, storytelling and plot structure, computer hardware and the games industry as a whole. Students also have the opportunity to meet practising industry professionals and undertake assignments set by local games studios.

The qualification is equivalent to three A-levels which means when you have finished the course you can choose whether to enter into higher education or seek to enter the industry.

A BTEC Extended Diploma is normally taken full-time and equally suitable for school leavers and mature students.

What modules are covered?

Over the course of the two years, you will study the following subjects:

? Year 1 : Life Drawing, 2D Graphics, 3D Modelling, Game Design, Concept Art, Art Theory.

? Year 2 : Level Design, 3D Animation, Storytelling, Character Design, Working to a Professional Brief, Game Engines, Project Management.

What qualifications will I get?

BTEC Extended Diploma in Art & Design, awarded by Edexcel

How will I be assessed?

All non A Level qualifications including BTECs will now have some part of the course assessed externally (up to a maximum of 40% of the units). This still means that the majority of a BTEC course is assessed as normal as a student progresses through the two years by the teachers at the College through the coursework but there will be some units that have external assessments. The external assessments can take many forms: some might be practical projects such as responding to a particular brief or working on a project in controlled conditions, as well as traditional written or online examinations. Examples of all of the different types of assessment will be created in time to allow all students to practice and prepare for the real thing.

What are the entry requirements?

Minimum qualifications: Full level 2

Minimum of four GCSE passes at grade C or above to include English, Maths and a relevant arts based subject.
Alternatively a BTEC Level 2 qualification in Art & Design or a related subject at Merit or above is acceptable.
Students will be required to take functional skills in English and maths in their first year of study should they not have GCSE at the required grade. The level of functional skills will be decided at initial assessment.

A portfolio of artwork is to be presented at interview. Portfolio must demonstrate drawing ability, creativity and imagination, through original art and design work in a variety of media. Other work such as photography or creative writing can also be included. Mature students with relevant skills or experience will also be considered.

What else do I need to know?

All specialist studies are supported by the development of core skills in drawing, art and design, professional development, computer studies, and qualified additional support.

English and Maths

English and maths qualifications are vitally important for future employers and universities, so the government has made it a priority for students to improve these skills.

Entry Level / Level 1 and Level 2: We’re here to help you on your journey, so if you do not achieve grade A*-C in GCSE English and/or maths, then you will study English and/or maths as part of your college course.

Students who achieve a D grade will be placed on the relevant GCSE programme, while students who achieve an E or below will be assessed to ensure they are placed on the right study programme for their ability.

Level 3 programmes: You will need to meet the course entry requirements specified on the course information above. For the majority of our Level 3 courses, students will need grade A*-C in GCSE English and/or maths. If this is not specified in the course entry requirement, then you may be able to study English and/or maths as part of your college course.

What can I do after this course?

The Extended Diploma in Art & Design (Games Art) qualifies for UCAS points. The course helps you to develop a body of work and aims to prepare you for a wide choice of progression options in to further study, training or relevant employment. Students who successfully complete the qualification will be well equipped to move on to BA (Hons) or Foundation degree programmes, or maybe try to enter the rapidly expanding games industry.
