Garden Design The Pershore Diploma in Garden Design Location Start Date Day Time Fees Duration Pershore Sep-2016 Thu 09:15 - 16:45 see below 2Year(s) What will I study?

This design led course is ideal for those seeking a career in garden design.  It aims to develop the design skills of those who are self-employed or are working in gardens or with landscape contractors. The course is taught by horticultural and design experts, using the excellent facilities at Pershore College in Worcestershire and is offered at a higher education level making it suitable for those wishing to develop a deeper understanding of garden and landscape design.

What modules are covered?

Modules may include:

Year 1

Introduction to Garden Design

You will learn about the principles of visual design and apply these to create effective garden designs. The defining characteristics of a range of garden styles and themes will be studied and you will get the opportunity to develop graphic techniques.

Surveying and Design

The process of landscape surveying will be studied in detail and you will be able conduct a linear survey of a garden. Basic plan drawing techniques will be covered to enable you to draw a survey plan to a professional standard. Computer Aided Design will be introduced so that you have an awareness of the capabilities of CAD software.

Plant Use and Knowledge

You will learn how to identify and select plants for a range of garden and landscape situations. You will be made aware of the range of nursery stock available in the horticultural industry and how to establish a wide range of plants and soft landscape features.

Horticultural Science

This is a broad-based module with three key aspects. You will study plant diversity, structure and physiology in relation to horticulture. You will develop an understanding of soil properties and soil management. The module will also explain how to assess the impact of horticultural pests and diseases, and explain aspects of their biology and how to select methods for their control.

Year 2

Garden Design, Principles &  Practice

This module builds on the skills and knowledge developed in ‘Introduction to Garden Design’. Strategies for developing form from initial concept drawings will be investigated. The role of the garden designer will be examined in detail and you will develop your graphic presentation skills by using a range of techniques including 2D and 3D drawing, colour rendering and computer aided design.

Landscape Levelling and Construction

This module builds on the surveying skills developed in the first year module by focusing on the challenges of changes in level on a landscape site. Having assessed level changes the designer must be able to propose practical solutions to the problems posed by sloping sites including those of access, retaining structures and earthworks.

Plant Use and Design

You will learn how to recognise and identify a wide range of plants and make appropriate selections for a garden or landscape situation. The process of planting design will be studied and you will be able to design a planting plan for a border suitable for submission to a client.

Establishing and Managing a Small Business

This module is designed to assist you in developing the skills necessary to establish and operate a small business - often a single person business. Firstly, you are introduced to the business world and the different types of business organisations available to you. Business planning skills are then developed by introducing you to the planning, control and marketing techniques.
