ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
No formal qualifications are required. Students will need to show an interest
in working in this area. Good references from school and or an employer
are also considered to be important.
WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?
For students who may not hold any recognised qualifications but are keen to start a career in horticulture, countryside conservation or animal care. Students will choose to specialise in either Horticulture or Animal Care.
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
HORTICULTURE
This course is designed for those students interested in land-based activities: growing and maintaining plants, safe use of tools and machinery, landscaping activities and conservation. Much of this work takes place on the College site although in recent times the students have been practising learnt skills for charitable organisations requesting practical horticultural assistance. The latter includes maintaining woodlands, planting and laying hedges, wetland work and some estate skills. Embedded in these activities are literacy and numeracy skills. Students are assisted to set up their own websites during ICT lessons. The aim of the course is to enable students to either successfully gain employment at the end of the year or to be sufficiently interested and academically advanced to study a further course hopefully resulting in a qualification.
ANIMAL CARE
This course is designed for those who are interested in careers working with animals but who cannot access qualification based course. Students work is heavily based in practical skills, they will encounter a massive variety of species from small mammals to tarantulas.
Students will have the opportunity to develop specialist interests over time such as Reptile Handling or Wildlife Management.
This course is suitable for students who enjoy being around animals and who are enthusiastic and prepared to work hard both physically and mentally.
There will be off site activities arranged when Horticulture and Animal Care students will be together as a group when they will share interests and work together.
HOW WILL I LEARN?
There will be combination of written projects and outside practical work. You will often work as a group, so you should be able to get along with other people and also take some responsibility for getting on with tasks.
WHAT CAN THIS COURSE LEAD TO?
Once you have completed a basic skills development qualification in land based studies and depending on Literacy & Numeracy levels attained, you may qualify to study a 1st Diploma in Horticulture or Animal Care course the following year.
