    A Level

The course provides a stimulating and creative course of study broadening and intensifying candidates' musical abilities. Candidates will be provided with opportunities to develop their aural perception skills and their appreciation of and participation in music. Candidates will need to perform showing that they can interpret musical ideas with technical and expressive control and a sense of style. Candidates will be invited to create and develop musical ideas making creative use of musical devices and conventions.

About this course

Normally students 16 - 19 years of age will require a minimum of 6 GCSEs at grades A* - C, one of which must be either GCSE Mathematics or English Language. Students who have not taken GCSE music but have a high level of musical ability could possibly be considered. Entry for mature students without formal qualifications is at the discretion of the Curriculum area. Candidates should be able to perform to approximately Grade V standard. Ideally they should have GCSE Music Grade B and above. The ability to read music is essential.

AS Level:

  • Performance externally examined by a visiting examiner - 30%
  • Composition portfolio internally marked and externally moderated - 30%
  • Music Appraisal and Aural perception examination - 40%

A level :

  • This follows a similar pattern but candidates opt to add extra weighting to one of the three units of their choice.
