    A Level

Many people in Wales have growing concerns about poverty and the environment. This course seeks to extend and develop students understanding of the growing gap between the rich and the poor and the relationship between resources and population. The course will explore development issues such as poverty, inequality, fair and unfair trade, globalisation, debt, conflict, the arms trade, environmental sustainability and aid. Students on the course will be able to study the issues and responsibilities surrounding sustainable development and global citizenship in some depth, become informed and take opportunities to become active participants.

About this course

Normally students 16 - 19 years of age will require a minimum of 6 GCSEs at grades A* - C, one of which must be either GCSE Mathematics or GCSE English Language. A good standard of communication skills is essential. A GCSE in Geography is desirable but an interest in the world and how it is changing is more critical.

Course programme

  • The teaching encourages students to develop the ability of critical analysis and independent thinking

  • The World Development lecturers have a background in world development. One lecturer has spent seven years working in the UK charity Oxfam at its headquarters and visiting projects in Central Africa and Eastern Europe. The other has worked in the energy industry
  • Fieldwork and university lectures will be an integral part of the course
  • Students have an opportunity to become involved in the college's Amnesty International group.
  • The course has been designed to provide suitable foundation for the study of social sciences at university level
  • There is a direct progression from the A level to study a degree in world, sustainable or international development at Aberystwyth, Bangor, Manchester, Leeds, Bath, Chester and London Met
  • The study of World Development would prove a great advantage to A2 level Geographers particularly when studying Human Geography at university
  • Students will develop a greater understanding of development, poverty, economics, conflict, politics and our impact on the environment. In addition students who intend to study at one of the Russell Group Universities would benefit greatly from world development as the subject would improve their current affairs knowledge and understanding

Additional information

AS level

  • One exam, worth 70% of marks (WD1) based on themes one and two. This two hour paper will have four compulsory structured questions
  • Four short pieces of coursework, worth 30% of marks (WD2) chosen by the students

A2 Level

  • One exam, worth 70% of marks (WD3) based on themes 1 and 2. This three hour paper will have 3 compulsory questions and two multiple choice essay questions
  • One piece of coursework in the form of a written formal report, worth 30% of marks (WD4). Topic chosen by the students
