2. Course description Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour. The psychology A level will act as a bridge between GCSE and university. The course introduces you to the research skills you will need to conduct your own psychological research by giving you practical experience of conducting mini experiments. Aside from learning how to conduct research yourself yuou will also study existing research in fields such as Forensic and Health psychology. You will study a classic and a contemporary (recent) piece of research to see how they apply to key themes. For example you will look at whether human behaviour is due to nature (genetics) or nurture (upbringing) by looking at two pieces of forensic research where one shows evidence of a criminal gene and the other that criminals commit crime due to their surroundings. Topics studied include autism multiple personality disorder eye witness testimony gambling addiction and how children learn aggressive behaviour to name a few. In Forensic Psychology you will gain exceptional understanding of various reasons as to why a person may turn to crime offender profiling psychology of the courtroom and also punishments and treatments of criminals. In Health and Clinical Psychology you will study factors that influence healthy lifestyles causes and management of stress dysfunctional behaviour and disorders. The AS course is examined by two exams (1.5 hrs each) the A level course by 3 exams (2 hrs each).
