Course programme
Chemistry GCSE
COURSE AIMS
You will develop essential knowledge and understanding of the concepts of chemistry and to prepare you for the AS chemistry course the following year.
CONTENT
C1: looks at products from oil, rocks and plants, the changing Earth and atmosphers and the effect of human activity on the environment.
C2: looks at the atom, rates of reaction, energy in reactions and structures.
C3: looks at the Periodic table, acids and alkalis and identification and analysis of substances.
HOW WILL I STUDY?
Lessons will include: note-taking, class discussion, practical work, individual tutorials and developing key skills
Lessons will take place in well equipped laboratories with opportunities to develop the skills required for higher education courses. The IT suite next to the laboratories will allow you access to many interactive revision sites, to enable you to test your developing knowledge of the subject throughout the course.
CENTRE ASSESSED UNIT
This includes a Practical Skills Assessment (PSA), which is carried out during normal class time and an Investigative Skills Assessment (ISA). The ISA involves an individual practical task and a short test involving the analysis and interpretation of your own results.
ASSESSMENT
There are two levels of entry. The course is designed for foundation level (C to G) but it may be possible to enter for the higher level (A* to D)
There are three 45 minute papers (one for each unit) accounting for a total of 75% of the marks
The Centre Assessed Unit accounts for the remaining 25% of the marks.
COMBINATIONS WITH CHEMISTRY
Chemistry can be taken with any other subject except Core science. Some students take chemistry with other science subjects such as physics and human physiology, while others take chemistry as their only science subject.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
A grade D in G.C.S.E. Chemistry or D/D in core and Additional Science. You may be considered with other qualifications but you must discuss these with the subject co-ordinator.
LENGTH OF COURSE
One year
WHERE NEXT?
Many students go on to take the AS and then A-level chemistry courses, before going onto university. Others go onto courses where knowledge of chemistry is useful.
