About this course
This 1 - year course is designed to allow progression to A level Chemistry if a grade B or higher is achieved. Two of the three units will be similar to work covered in GCSE Double Science.
Students need to have completed a GCSE course in Double Science or Chemistry and gained a minimum of grade E.

Course Content:
The course is made up of three units and a coursework component which are as follows:
Unit 1: Rocks, metals, hydrocarbons and the atmosphere. (25%)
Students take a one hour exam for this unit in January.
Coursework: Practical Skills Assessment (PSA) during the year, and at least one Investigative Skills Assignment (ISA). (25%)
Unit 2: The atom, chemical reactions and ions. (25%)
Students take a one-hour exam for this unit in June.
Unit 3: Periodic table, acids and alkalis, water and analysing substances. (25%)
Students take a one-hour exam for this unit in June.
Teaching Learning Methods:
The course is taught using a range of learning activities, including experiments, demonstrations, working through questions, listening to talks, making notes and group work.
Skills & Commitment:
Successful students are those that have an interest in science and are curious about the natural world. Good attendance, punctuality and organisational skills are essential and a full-time commitment to the class work and homework over the whole year is a necessary requirement if the full benefits are to be realised.
Cost:
You will need to provide your own paper, files and writing materials. The college will provide laboratory coats, graph paper and textbooks.
