Introduction
This is a combined language and literature course which is offered as a resit and is run over one year. The examining body is AQA and external examinations take place in early June.
The classes aim to build upon your existing knowledge of language and literature, and every effort will be made to help and support you during your studies.
Course Content
As mentioned in the introduction, this is a combined language and literature course. As such two texts will be studied and will form the basis for your literature coursework, these are John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men" and Shakespeare's "Othello." Two other pieces of coursework are required and form the language content, these are a piece of fiction writing and a piece of fctual writing.
You will also be required to study pre release material sent by the examining body - AQA. This is a booklet that contains poetry from other cultures and a selection of media materials. These will be discussed and analysed in class together - your input is required! You will learn the technical skills to handle these with ease - so don't worry!
Entry Requirements
The requirement for admission onto this course is a D at GCSE or a level 2 Key Skills Communication pass. There is no entry requirement for mature/evening students.
It should be noted that whilst these entry requirements are quite rigid, consideration will be given to those who have not attained the above.
Duration
The course is run over a year and involves two hours teaching contact per week. Generally, you will be assigned to either Group A who meet on Monday and Tuesday or Group B who meet on Wednesday and Thursday. It is vital that you attend both sessions per week!
Please note that youwillneed to do some work in your own time, additional support can be offered.
Assessment
Assessment (four pieces of cousework)has to be completed by 31st March,and two external examinations.
Progression
Passing GCSE English is vital to whatever career you wish to pursue. Most university courses insist upon GCSE English and you will find it very difficult to obtain a place in Higher Education without it. Similarly, most employers require this qualification.
Successful completion of GCSE English at higher level could lead on to consideration for our Advanced course in English Language and Literature.
Fees
For most students the course is free, however if you have already taken this exam at Leek College you will be expected to pay the exam registration fee and the administration fee.
Those taking the course in the evening should check with reception with regard to fees payable.
