The course is made up of three parts: Written Coursework (20% of marks), Oral Coursework (20% of marks) and Examination (60% of marks).
Written Coursework
There are four pieces of coursework. Each piece is worth 5% of the total marks:
Original writing a personal essay or story of your choice.
Media work a piece based on media text.
Shakespeare oral assessment of your choice
Prose Study a critical piece of writing about a short novel.
Oral Coursework
You will be assessed on your ability to speak and to listen to others. There will be three assessments during the year, involving individual, pair and group work.
Examination
This is the largest part of the course and therefore a lot of time will be spent preparing for this:
Paper One (30%) Two essays involving reading and writing based on unseen materials.
Paper Two (30%) One essay based on poetry from different cultures and traditions in the Pre-Release Anthology and one general essay.

Key Skills
Nearly all students on this course produce evidence of attainment for Key Skills Communication from their other subjects. However, should you find that your subjects do not allow for this, then you can achieve levels 1 and 2 from English.
