Course programme

This results in two AQA (A) GCSEs in English Language and English Literature. A single English Language GCSE can be studied if desired over a 9 month period.

Course Content

Speaking and Listening
Students are expected to develop the capacity to express themselves effectively in a variety of speaking and listening activities, matching style and response to audience and purpose.

Reading
Students are expected to read accurately and fluently, understand and respond to literature from the English Literary Heritage and from other cultures and traditions, analysing and evaluating a wide range of texts.

Writing
Students are expected to construct and convey meaning in written language; using correct grammar and standard English, matching style to audience and purpose.

Assessment

English Language -The students' performance will be assessed by coursework
(40%) and examination (60%).

Coursework - Three speaking and listening tasks will be assessed (20%).
Written skills will be assessed in four units of work which will form the student's portfolio (20%).

Examination - Paper 1 Section A: reading and response to non-fiction/media text.

Section B: writing to argue, persuade or advise.
Paper 2 Section A: reading and response to poetry from other cultures and traditions from the AQA Anthology.
Section B: writing to explain, inform or describe.

English Literature -The students' performance will be assessed by coursework
(30%) and examination (70%).

Coursework - Written skills will be assessed in three units of work which will form the student's portfolio (30%).

Examination - Paper 1 Section A: One question based on post 1914 prose.
Section B: One question based on pre and post 1914 poetry from the AQA anthology

Length of Course: 9 (for just Language) or 20 months (for Language & Literature)
Weekly Lessons: 4 hours (taken as two 2 hour lessons)
