GCSE ENGLISH LANGUAGE
Entry Requirements
No formal requirements. An interest in improving
ability in reading, writing and speaking. Level of entry will be decided
in consultation with your lecturer. As this is an academic examination
based course, there will be a substantial time commitment required in
order for students to complete this course successfully.
Description
This
course is vital for anyone seeking to improve their qualifications,
particularly for employment, returning to education or for moving onto
further education. The course will help students to express themselves in
writing and speech more clearly. This course includes the study of two
pieces of literature: a Shakespearean play and a selection of short
stories for coursework and poetry and media pieces for the examinations.
The course is designed to increase students' enjoyment of reading and
writing.

- Techniques for writing about
personal experiences
- Techniques for presenting arguments and facts

Awareness of the features of different styles of writing
- How to write
using good grammar and punctuation
- How to improve spelling
- The
study of techniques used by writers
- Study of a Shakespeare play

Study of poetry and prose pre-1900 and post-1900
- Responding to texts
from another culture; media texts and non-fiction texts.
After
completing this course you should be able to:
- Write in a variety of
styles for a variety of purposes
- Read, understand and respond to all
types of writing
- Be aware of the use of correct grammar and Standard
English in appropriate contexts.
During this course there will be
an opportunity for students to take an additional qualification in Adult
Literacy.
Students are reminded that this is an academic course and
they must allow time for private study and home assignments in addition to
lectures.
Where a course is aimed towards an assessment/examination, it
is expected that all students will enter for the qualification.
Method
of Assessment
Assessment is based upon two exam papers each bearing
30% of the total marks, coursework worth 20% and oral work assessment
worth 20%.
Progression
English Language GCSE is seen as
extremely important for joining a wide range of other AS or A Levels, or
other vocational/employment courses.
