WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT?
You will be on a course that provides an opportunity to study a rewarding subject and to gain a qualification which is essential for many careers. You can study this course as a single subject or combine it with other subjects.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?
This intensive course of study is designed for students wishing to develop existing English skills. Following the first term where 4 coursework essays are prepared, students will be routed towards either a GCSE or OCR National Literacy Test. Those taking the OCR route will spend time preparing for a short English test.

The syllabus includes the preparation of essays in four topics: original writing, media studies, a novel and a short study of a play from Shakespeare. You will also consider poetry and different kinds of writing for the examinations.

Learners will be expected to develop their spelling, grammar and punctuation throughout the course.

WHAT ARE MY COMMITMENTS?
A high level of commitment is needed in order to complete this intensive course and you will need to regularly attend classes for 2 hours per week on Tuesday evenings from 7.00 to 9.00pm, in order to be considered for exam entry. In addition you will need to spend 2 hours per week on coursework at home or in college to meet the requirements of the course.

WHAT WILL I ACHIEVE?
On successful completion of the course and examinations you will achieve a a GCSE or OCR qualification.

WHAT CAN I DO AFTERWARDS?
You will find that GCSE English is required for entry into a number of courses and careers. In addition you can progress to AS/A level or other advanced courses.
