Is it for me?
GCSE English is one of the most commonly required qualifications for those seeking employment or hoping to progress to higher level courses.
This one year course follows the AQA Specification A and is designed to improve your skills in the key areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening.
What do I need?
There are no formal entry requirements.
What will I study?
A significant focus of the course is to develop the sense that different kinds of reading & writing are appropriate to different audiences and purposes and so you will be encouraged to consider a variety of materials. You will read newspaper articles, leaflets and letters and you will have the opportunity to discuss a wide variety of stories, plays and poems, including some Shakespeare.
While there will obviously be a lot of work done on spelling, punctuation and grammar the classes are lively and informal and there will be a lot of discussion and group activity.
GCSE English can be studied over one year, in this class, or over two years by starting in the Bridging English class (Leaflet attached). At the first class all students will be given an initial assessment and asked to produce a short piece of writing. As a result of this assessment you will be directed to the option which gives you the greatest opportunity to succeed.
Where will I study?
Baltic Campus
You'll be based at our fantastic £39million Baltic campus on the quayside. The campus has a prime location on Gateshead quayside, and state-of-the-art facilities including a Jacuzzi, gym and sauna, a 200 seat theatre, state-of-the-art classrooms, training kitchen and restaurant, refectory, bistro and vending areas.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment is through 4 pieces of coursework and an end examination.

GCSE English Language
Can I go on to further study?
You can progress to A levels, a BTEC National Diploma, Higher Education Foundation Programme, GNVQ or employment.
