Awarding Body: AQA 3527 Short Course A

Course Content:
Students will study how ICT can be used to solve problems in today's ICT driven society. This will include investigating the following topics:

Hardware & Software
Databases
Spreadsheets
Presentations
Health & Safety
The Internet
Data Modelling
Information Systems

This course is designed to promote awareness of how ICT can relate to both individuals and organisations.

Teaching Learning Methods:
Students can expect to participate in:
· Student lead discussions
· Practical exercises
· Studying specific case studies
· Writing essays and reports
· Weekly assessments
· Working individually as well as part of a team

Key Skills:
Key Skills are developed and assessed in addition to the core teaching program.

Assessment:
Students can be entered for either the Foundation Tier or the Higher Tier; depending on how well they perform throughout the academic year.

Examination:
1 Paper (40% of the final grade)

Course Work:
1 Case Study (60% of the final grade)

Skills & Commitment:
All students should be able to demonstrate the following skills and aptitude:

A keen interest in ICT and how it plays a part in solving problems.
A willingness to work independently
A willingness to use the VLE
An ability to communicate well; both in terms of written assignments and class discussions.
A willingness to put in an additional 4 - 6 hours 'home' time in addition to their 3 hours 'college' time.

All students at GCSE level should aim to achieve grade C or above.

Cost:
Students should be willing to purchase writing paper, pens and floppy disks, etc.

Progression:
Once a student has successfully completed the GCSE ICT (Short Course A) course (Grade C - A), they will have the opportunity to enrol on the AVCE ICT course. Also, if a student has been awarded a grade B - A grade in Mathematics, as well as a grade C - A in GCSE ICT, they could enrol on the AS/A2 Computing course. This will prepare a clear pathway for those students wishing to pursue ICT at Higher Education level.
