Course programme

The GCSE Mathematics course follows the GCSE Mathematics syllabus in terms of content, but the Ryde Teaching Services approach to the subject is different to that in most schools.

The National Curriculum 'spirals' around the topics, revisiting each one in more detail each year, whereas Ryde Teaching Services will frequently concentrate on one topic from bottom to top.

Key Course Areas
The course will teach students the ability to:

Make and monitor decisions to solve problems
Communicate mathematically
Develop skills of mathematical reasoning
Understand place value and the decimal number system
Understand and use relationships between numbers and develop methods of computation
Solve numerical problems
Understand and use functional relationships
Understand and use equations and formulae
Understand and use properties of position, movement and transformation
Understand and use measures
Collect, process, represent and interpret data
Estimate and calculate the probabilities of events

During the course, students will be required to produce two pieces of coursework (one of which will be Handling Data). These will constitute as 20% of the exam result and will help to put the ideas learnt into context and give the student experience of mathematical investigation.

The Examination will be taken with Edexcel (London Examinations), using syllabus 1387.

Mathematics is one of the core subjects and the ability to do well in this will be of great benefit to students studying science subjects.
