About this course

There are no minimum entry requirements for this course. You will be entered for GCSE Maths at the Foundation tier if you have a previous D grade. If you have an E grade or below, you will be entered for the GCSE Use of Maths award. You will also have the opportunity to do Functional Skills and one Free-Standing Mathematics Qualification (FSMQ).

GCSE MATHEMATICS

AQA (1 year)

These are Foundation level GCSE Maths Courses, where the maximum grade is C. If you have already gained a C grade but need a B grade, then we can make special arrangements for you.

Methods of Teaching

Classes will be varied, comprising investigations, skills practice, class discussions and use of appropriate ICT resources.Your teachers will show you how to make effective use of the department intranet. They will make use of an electronic whiteboard and a suite of 24 computers housed within the mathematics department. The mathematics staff are keen to ensure that all students develop their full mathematical potential. In addition to timetabled periods, there is a well-resourced workshop that is available every lunchtime for students to gain additional support.

Methods and Patterns of Assessment

GCSE MATHEMATICS

GCSE Maths is a modular course, which is divided up into three main sections:

1.Statistics and Probability -the first module covers averages, charts and graphs, and simple probabilities.

2.Number -this module covers approximations, rations, fractions, percentages, conversions, standard form and indices.

3.Algebra and Shape -this is the largest module, covering two sub-sections:

a) Algebra and graphs - solving equations, simplifying expressions, using formulae, travel graphs, straight line graphs and curves.

b)Shape, space and measure - areas and volumes, geometry, trigonometry, bearings, transformations.

GCSE USE OF MATHS

GCSE Use of Maths is also a modular course, which is divided up into three main sections:
  • Free-Standing Maths Qualification in Finance- covering best buys, reading information from tables, credit and percentage and tax.
  • Free-Standing Maths Qualification in Handling Data- covering graphs, interpreting data, statistics and averages.
  • Functional Skills- an examination covering basic GCSE level skills in number, data and graphs.

Career Possibilities

A grade C is an essential entry requirement for most universities and careers, including teaching. A grade C is required for most level 3 courses, with the exception of some subjects that require a grade B.
