GCSE Physical Education

Awarding Body: OCR - Syllabus 1970

Course Content:
The course is divided into two sections:
1. The theoretical component:
2. Practical skill:
Each candidate must select two activities from different groups, i.e. Invasion games, Net/Wall games and Striking/Fielding/ and Target games.

Teaching Learning Methods:
Students will take part in both theory and practical based lessons. Group work is an essential part of the physical education programme. Students will also be required to carry out a small-scale investigation on a practical of their choice.

Key Skills:
Key Skills Communication level 2 will be delivered through coursework relating to a practical activity. Students will be required to analyse performance and present their findings in the form of a presentation and report verbally on their observations.

Assessment:
Paper 1: Written paper (40%)
The paper is divided into two parts:
Section A: Short structured questions.
Section B: Three longer structured questions.
Both sections cover the three units of study:
- Factors affecting participation and performance.
- Relationship between health, fitness and physical activity.
- Risk assessment in physical activity.

Paper 2: Practical Skills (60%)

Students will be assessed in four practical activities:
(a) A final practical assessment (50%)
(b) Performance analysis (10%)
Candidates will be required to analyse performance based on one activity.

Skills & Commitment:
Students are expected to take part in college sporting activities, which include clubs, and extra curricular activities.

Cost:
Students will be expected to wear appropriate PE kit.

Progression:
Students can progress onto AS level PE or BTEC National Diploma in Sport.
