Physics GCSE

INTRODUCTION
Physics can form a key component of a balanced course of study linking well with most other available GCSE subjects. (Not modular science). It may also complement advanced level studies and vocational courses in other subject areas.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?
Students will experience the systematic development of a body and knowledge in physics and an understanding of concepts, principles and applications.

CONTENT
This AQA syllabus features "the best of both worlds" with some topics familiar to those who have followed a GCSE science course (the subject core) and new topics (the subject extension) which will provide additional stimulation and interest to encourage further study.

There are three units:
Energy and Electricity, Radiation and the Universe
Motion and Current. Radioactivity Forces,
Light and Transformers

ASSESSMENT
The examination in January consists of one written paper consisting of a range of structured questions and carries 25% of the total marks. In June you will sit two other papers worth 25% of the marks. There will be opportunities to develop practical/experimental skills in the laboratory whilst undertaking specific investigations. Assessment in these skills qualifies you for a further 25% of the total marks.

HOW WILL I STUDY?
The course will be undertaken using a variety of teaching and learning styles. As well as lessons/lectures and laboratory demonstrations, you will be expected to take part in tutorials and group discussions.

You will spend 4 hours per week in the laboratory and you should allocate another 4 hours per week for self study. Physics is studied in a friendly working environment, based in well equipped laboratories.

Students are encouraged to undertake reading and research using the central resources area and to develop their ability to process and present experimental data using the extensive I.T. facilities.
