GCSE (re-sit) English Language
This course will help you develop skills in reading, writing, presentation, and speaking and listening. You will study a range of texts including literary, non-literary and media through which you will experience a variety of cultures and time periods. You will develop skills in writing and speaking for different audiences and purposes.

What will I be doing?
You will participate in a range of class activities and tasks both written and spoken. You will often work in pairs or small groups as well as producing written work individually. You will study a wide range of texts from different genres including poetry, prose and Shakespeare.

You will have to produce 1 speaking and listening coursework, plus 4 pieces of coursework as follows:
  • Prose
  • Media
  • Original writing
  • Shakespeare
You will also develop skills in analysing texts, comparing poetry and writing in different styles in preparation for the final exam.

How will I be assessed?
Throughout the course you will be given regular assessed written, reading, speaking and listening tasks to help you develop the skills necessary for exam success.
You will be formally assessed by exams in June and through the coursework (20%). You will have 2 papers (each worth 30%) as follows:
  • Paper 1, 1 hour 45 minutes, reading response to unseen texts, writing to argue, persuade or advise
  • Paper 2, 1 hour 30 minutes, reading response to poetry (anthology) and writing to inform, explain or describe.
Where can I go after completing the course?
English Language GCSE combined with 4 other GCSEs above grade C, or a BTEC First, qualifies you to progress to A levels or to a BTEC National. Most employers would expect you to have GCSE English, and a grade C is required to progress to university.
