INTRODUCTION

Of course, the subject may broaden an A level curriculum for students who have missed the opportunity to study GCSE science for whatever reasons.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?
Basic conceptual understanding of three separate sciences. It will prepare you for the AS Applied Science course the following year or provide you with science qualification for entry into a range of University courses.

CONTENT
Based on the AQA specification there are 3 units:
Biology B1 Considers Life and Living processes, Environment, Inheritance and Selection
Chemistry C1 Looks at products from oil, rocks and plants, the changing Earth and atmosphere and the effects of human activity on the environment
Physics P1 Considers the efficient â€-use†and transfer of energy

ASSESSMENT
There are two levels of entry. The course is designed for foundation level (C to G), but it may be possible to enter for the higher level. There are three 45 mins multiple choice papers taken in January and June accounting for a total of 75% of the marks. The Centre Assessed unit accounts for the remaining 25%

HOW WILL I STUDY?
About 10 weeks will be allowed for each module, and a variety of teaching and learning styles will be employed. In addition to taught lessons and discussion sessions, practical/experimental work will play an important part at all times. The lessons take place in well equipped laboratories in a friendly working environment. Students are encouraged to make use of the I.T. facilities to help with revision, research and presentation of coursework.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
It is anticipated that students will have some prior experience of science. A grade D or E in core science or double award is essential. Students with no formal qualifications in science must see the subject co-ordinator before enrolment. Although the course starts at a basic level, to gain maximum benefit from it, students need to sustain their determination and commitment throughout the year.

LENGTH OF COURSE
One year.
Module tests in January and in June.

WHERE NEXT?
If a student shows genuine affinity for the subject during the course, then consideration could be given to progression on to G.C.S.E. separate science or AS Applied Science. Opportunities for employment exist in the laboratories of industrial concerns, with interests in manufacturing and hospital laboratories.
