Entry Requirements
Previous study of the language is essential.
Description
This
is a course enabling students to develop skills of reading, writing,
speaking and listening in Spanish. This one-year course aims to enable
effective written and spoken communication in Spanish. To achieve a pass
you will need to attend classes regularly and be prepared to set aside at
least 2 hours per week for homework.
Course Content
- The
course covers the four elements of communication, reading, writing,
speaking and listening in a variety of situations. The themes are: My
World; Holiday Time and Travel; Work and Lifestyle; The Young Person in
Society
- You will be able to discuss the above with others, in the
target language
- You will be able to understand others sharing similar
information with you, in the target language
After completing this
course you should be able to:
- Communicate with confidence in the
target language, with a reasonable degree of accuracy
- Understand the
gist of verbal and written communication in the target language

Demonstrate a sound understanding of the grammar of the target language
Students
are reminded that this is an academic course and they must allow time for
private study and home assignments in addition to lectures.
Where a
course is aimed towards an assessment/examination, it is expected that all
students will enter for the qualification.
Method of Assessment
Examination
in the four elements in May or June. Course finishes with last exam,
before half-term in May. The exam is at 2 levels - Foundation or Higher.
At Higher Level you can achieve grades A to D and at Foundation Level
grades C to G only.
Listening - F: 30 mins, H: 40 mins
Speaking
- F: 8-10 mins, H: 10-12 mins
Reading - F: 30 mins, H: 50 mins
Writing
- F: 40 mins, H: 60 mins
Progression
The course lays an
appropriate foundation for further study of Spanish or related subjects.
In
addition it provides a worthwhile course for candidates of various ages
and from diverse backgrounds in terms of general education and lifelong
learning.
Materials
Materials, books and equipment needed:
You will only
be asked to provide yourself with the course book(s) as advised by your
lecturer. It is not necessary to buy any cassette tapes. It is helpful to
listen to the language as much as possible. The local library also has
various language courses, which can be borrowed.
