Entry Test
All students are tested before they start their course. This is to make sure you are placed at the right level. The entry test takes about one hour to complete. When you have started your course, the teacher will check your level in the first week. If they think that you are not in the right level you will be automatically transferred to the correct class.
Terms
The General English course is divided into terms of 16 weeks each for the levels Elementary to Intermediate and 24 weeks each for the levels FCE to Proficiency. The Beginners course is 4 weeks. Each term the teacher will guide you through one complete textbook. At the end of the term you will be tested to see if you can move up to the next level.
Moving up levels
At the end of the term, you will take a level-up test to see if you are ready for the next level. Once you have passed the level-up test, you will automatically be moved into the next class. If you are ready to move before the end of the term, your teacher can recommend you to move to the next level immediately but you will still need to take the level-up test. If at the end of the term you do not pass the level-up test, you will have to stay in the same level, but you will not repeat the same book: a new book will be used for the new term.
Tutorials
The teacher will meet with you to discuss your progress on the course twice each term: in the middle and at the end. This helps students to tell their teacher about what they are finding difficult and the teacher can give advice about how to solve these problems.
Books
You must buy a textbook at the start of each term. We find this the best way to encourage students to practice not just in the classroom but also at home. It also means you have a good record of what you have learnt, so that you can revise for your exams.
Examinations
We recommend that students take the University of Cambridge ESOL exams. They are held three times a year and you can book an exam through LITE. The exams take place at examination centers in central London. To help you prepare for the exams, we have special exam preparation courses.
