The General English course is for students who want to learn English in an interesting, fun and lively way. This is our most popular course and it combines studying in a classroom, a lively social programme and online support. When you leave the college this online support can be continued to help pratice and maintain your english. Suitable for: Most students are aged between 22 and 30, although we have a full range of ages in each class and anyone aged 18 or above is welcome. Each class has a good mix of nationalities to encourage a lively exchange of cultures and experience. Even if you do find that there are people from your country in your class, you will not be allowed by the teacher to speak in your language during the lesson!

Terms

The General English Course is divided into terms of 16 weeks each for the levels elementary to intermediate and 24 weeks each for the levels FCE to proficiency. The beginner’s course is 4 weeks.

Each term, the teacher will guide you through one complete textbook. At the end of the term, you will be tested to see if you can move up to the next level.

Moving Up a Level

At the end of the term, you will take a level-up test to see if you are ready for the next level. Once you have passed the level-up test, you will automatically be moved into the next class.

If you are ready to move before the end of the term, your teacher can recommend that you move to the next level immediately but you will still need to take the level-up test.

If at the end of the term you do not pass the level-up test, you will have to stay in the same level, but you will not repeat the same book: a new book will be used for the new term.

Teachers

The teachers at LITE College are all TEFL/CELTA qualified and provide lively, exciting lessons to their students.

We want your learning experience to be useful and fun, so our teachers are chosen for their ability to use a communicative method in the classroom (Take a look at the meet us page to see some of our teaching staff).

Tutorials

Your teacher will meet with you to discuss your progress on the course 3 times each term: at the beginning, in the middle and at the end.

This helps you to tell your teacher about what you are finding difficult and they can give you advice on how to solve these problems.

Progress Test

In the middle of the term you will be given a progress test, which will show you and your teacher what you have learnt. Your teacher can also give you advice about how to improve your learning techniques.

Books

Students must buy a textbook at the start of each term. We find this is the best way to encourage students to practice not just in the classroom but also at home.

It also means you have a good record of what you have learnt so that you can revise for your exams!

The average book price is £16 to £20, depending on the title. LITE will buy books back that have not been damaged or written in for £8 pounds less than the original price.

We also have second-hand books available to buy at a cheaper price.

Examinations

All our English students are encouraged to take formal exams once they have reached the First Certificate (FCE) level.

We recommend that students take the University of Cambridge ESOL exams. They are held 3 times a year and you can book an exam at LITE. The exams take place at examination centres in central London.

To help students prepare for the exams, we have special exam preparation courses.
