What is this course about?

How do people change their environment? How does the environment affect people? By focusing on current global issues linked to physical and human geography, you will explore the relationship between people and their environment. You will be encouraged to think critically about the world around you; to make decisions about the future; and to develop a wide range of geographical skills.

What topics will I study?

At AS:

Unit 1: Global Challenges

World at Risk, Going Global. The meaning, causes, impacts and management of global challenges.

Unit 2: Geographical Investigations

Extreme Weather, Crowded Coasts, Unequal Spaces, Rebranding Places. How physical and human issues influence lives and can be managed.

At A2:

Unit 3: Contested Planet

Energy Security, Water Conflicts, Biodiversity, Under Threat, Superpower Geographies, Bridging the Development Gap, The Technological Fix? Many resources are finite, and rising consumption means that difficult decisions over the use of resources will have to be taken more frequently.

Unit 4: Geographical Research

Tectonic Activity and Hazards.

How will my work be assessed?

At AS:
  • Unit 1 will be assessed by a 1½ hour exam consisting of data response, short answer and essay questions.
  • Unit 2 will be assessed by a 1 hour exam consisting of longer answers.
At A2:
  • Unit 3 will be assessed by a 2½ hour exam consisting of data stimulus essay questions and pre-released material.
  • Unit 4 will be assessed by a 1½ hour exam consisting of a long essay based on pre-released material.
At both AS and A2 there is no assessed coursework

What skills and knowledge do I need to succeed?

To succeed in Geography you will need to be able to absorb a lot of information quite quickly. You need to have an interest in the world around you.

Are there any specific entry requirements?

You will need a minimum of five GCSEs at grade C. You do not need to have studied GCSE Geography but you must be motivated by the subject.

What are the lessons like?
  • A range of teaching and learning styles is used during the course, with a strong emphasis on topical issues using up-to-date resources.
  • Fieldwork is a key element of the course, and you will be involved in a number of day trips during the two years, with an opportunity to go on a residential trip at A2
  • You will develop a wide range of skills, including communication, numeracy, use of IT, fieldwork skills, research skills, cartography, problem solving and decision making.

What do people do with A level Geography?
  • Geography is an excellent preparation for higher education because it crosses the arts/science divide and enables students to develop a wide range of valuable skills.
  • A level Geography can be used to progress onto a variety of geography and environmental degree courses and it has relevance to a wide range of career opportunities,
  • Past students can be found working in town planning, weather forecasting, surveying, teaching and estate agencies, and for organisations such as the Environment Agency and Southern Water.
