This Geography course runs in 2016/17.

This course lets you explore the dynamics of physical landscapes and their links with people and places. You will examine the physical and environmental principles that offer new insight into global issues such as climate change, sustainability and pollution.

WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?

You will explore the nature of the physical world, and the processes that shape it over time. In doing so, you will discover ways of protecting finite resources, and you will develop knowledge and practical skills that allow you to help solve environmental problems and make informed contributions to policy.

If you choose this course you will benefit from:

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

In your first year you will receive an introduction to the nature of landscapes and environmental systems and their relationship to human society, framed in terms of issues such as globalisation and sustainability.

In the second year you will examine more specific themes and approaches, developing your skills in research methods and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), examining key global challenges such as climate change, exploring particular parts of the physical environment, from rivers and coasts to oceans and atmosphere, and investigating geophysical and meteorological hazards.

In your final year you will deepen your understanding of environmental systems and problems, and assess a range of management strategies designed to reduce their impact. You will also have the opportunity to carry out an independent piece of research.

In each year you will complete an Add+vantage module.

HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

Your course will be based on a series of lectures, with associated seminars, fieldwork and practical classes. In addition, your personal tutor will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for one-to-one advice.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

Your final grade will be calculated from approximately: formal examinations 25%; coursework reports, essays, practicals, presentations, posters 60%; project work 15%.

TEACHING CONTACT HOURS

In a typical week you will have up to 16 contact hours of teaching and this will break down as:

Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 4 hours of small group teaching each week

Medium group teaching: 6 hours of practical classes, workshops or seminars each week

Large group teaching: 6 hours of lectures each week

Personal study: 20 hours each week studying and revising in your own time
