The terminology and translation of German GAAP and IFRS financial reports examined and explained for practising German-to-English translators, interpreters and terminologists.This masterclass-style seminar is a unique opportunity for practitioners to familiarise themselves with a wide range of translation and terminology issues relating to German financial reports prepared in accordance with German GAAP and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRSs). As well as providing comprehensive guidance on the monolingual and bilingual resources currently available to translators, it will describe the often complex legal basis for single-entity and consolidated financial reporting in Germany and use examples of published financial report translations to highlight a number of the key issues facing translators. An examination of potential translation strategies will be flanked by a discussion of style and register issues affecting financial report translations.The workshop is designed both as a stand-alone introduction to the topic and as a technical update for more experienced translators. This course is designed for practising German- English translators, interpreters and terminologists. Students should be English native speakers or have a near-native command of English. Day 1: German GAAP Financial Reporting
Status of German GAAP today, demand for translations – Recommended monolingual and bilingual terminology resources for translators – Principles of German GAAP – Single-entity primary financial statements – Recent developments in German Accounting Standards (GASs), including GASs 19 (Consolidation), 20 (Group Management Reports) and 21 (Cash Flow Statements), ongoing GAS projects – Current EU legislative initiatives in the field of financial accounting and corporate reporting and their impact on German GAAP
Day 2: IFRS Reporting in Germany
Application of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRSs) in Germany today – Sources of terminology for translators – IFRS reporting and translation principles – Consolidation – Elements of IFRS financial reports – Formats and minimum information – Primary financial statements, accounting policies and notes disclosures – Group management reports and other required disclosures – New standards (in particular IFRS 15) and selected ongoing IASB projects – The trend towards integrated reporting and related challenges
The morning and early afternoon sessions will consist of presentations on the topics concerned, and will be followed by interactive textual analysis workshops/terminology clinics.
