Course content:
This certificate is aimed at those operating communications equipment on non-statutory fitted vessels outside of designated A1 areas (over 30 miles from coast).
You will study:

Knowledge of the basic features of the maritime mobile service:
  • Types of communications
  • Types of stations in the service
  • Knowledge of frequencies and bands
  • Maintaining the functionality of ship station equipment


Detailed practical knowledge and ability to use the basic equipment of a ship station:
  • VHF equipment, R/T and DSC
  • MF/HF equipment, R/T and DSC
  • NAVTEX
  • EPIRB
  • SART
  • Inmarsat-C (as part of operational Satellite module)


Operational procedures of the GMDSS system:
  • Search and Rescue (SAR) procedures
  • Distress, Urgency and Safety communication procedures


Miscellaneous skills and operational procedures for general communications:
  • Ability to exchange communications
  • Regulations and procedures
  • Use of documentation
  • Charging
  • Shipping routes


Assessment procedure:
Assessment is externally set by AMERC on behalf of the MCA.
