Course programme

Government & Politics, A2-level
About the Course
You will consider a wide range of political concepts and political practice in the UK from c1945 to the present day, particularly emphasising contemporary political events. You will also consider the implications of the UK†s membership of the European Union and make comparisons between the UK and other countries such as the USA.
AS Level topics you will study include:
* Civil Liberties â€" for example, rights of privacy and the â€-right to know†.
* Pressure Groups and Protest Movements - why are some successful and others are not?
* Political Parties - how are they organised and what are their policies?
* Elections - how do they work and what factors influence people†s voting? Should we have more referendums?
* Parliament, the House of Commons and House of Lords - why is reform of the House of Lords so controversial?
* The Prime Minister and the Cabinet - where does power lie in the British political system?
At A2 Level you will study Government and Politics of the USA, focusing on the institutions of the President, Congress and Supreme Court. This will enable you to make comparative analysis of political processes and institutions in the USA and the UK. Many of the topics at AS Level are studied further at A2 Level, enabling you to learn in more depth and detail:
* Political ideas, philosophies and ideologies such as socialism, Marxism and liberalism
* The â€-continuity versus change†debate
* The inadequacy of existing political arrangements for ensuring representative democracy and participation in the political decision-making process
* The acquisition and exercise of political power
As Politics is a live - and lively - subject, you will need to keep up-to-date with current political events via radio, TV and newspapers. Discussion is a vital part of the course. Increasing use is made of the Internet for up-to-date information on what is happening in Parliament, 10 Downing Street and the major parties.
