Graphic Design - A and AS Levels
What are the main features of this course?
The first year is the AS level where a variety of experiences exploring a range of graphics media and techniques are introduced including print, digital media, mixed media and a variety of drawing techniques. Students will look at areas of graphic design used in everyday society such as advertising, packaging, typography, illustration, animation, logos and be expected to respond to a brief or respond to a concept or idea. As in all areas of Art and Design, students will need to research and refer to historical and contemporary developments and different styles and genres in their chosen area of Graphic Design.
The second year units will build on the skills, knowledge and understanding developed at AS level and will allow for a greater depth of study and experience with opportunity to develop individual interests.
Hours of lessons per week: 4.7 Indicative Group Size: 20
How is the course assessed?
The course is modular incorporating a coursework unit and a controlled test at both AS and A level. The coursework unit and the exam board set test both have equal weighting worth 50%. All units are internally assessed and externally moderated.
Who should study this course?
Students should have a grade C or above in Graphic Design, Art and Design or other creative subjects and the college requirements for A level students. Previous experience in folio form will be considered from more mature students.
Where can I go next?
The course provides a wide range of studies in portfolio form for entry onto Foundation Studies in Art and Design or degree level. This subject can be combined with other AS and A levels in the department, or combined with other disciplines to provide qualifications for entry to university.
