Graphic Design BTEC National Diploma Entry Requirements

Content The course aims to provide a broad based study in graphic design to meet the growing and challenging needs of the design industry. It focuses on the practical application of knowledge and the development of skills required for employment or academic progression. Through challenging design briefs, including 'live' briefs, students are provided with the opportunity to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal qualities and attitudes, which are essential for development in the design world.
There is strong emphasis on client liaison skills from the initial briefing meetings to final client presentations. Traditional skills such as drawing and illustrations are balanced with contemporary computing and software skills.

Year 1
Comprises of 5 core units:
  • Drawing Development
  • Historical and Contextual Understanding
  • Materials, Techniques and Processes
  • Ideas and Concepts
  • Visual Communication
Plus 4 specialist units:
  • Computers in Art and Design
  • Type and Letterforms
  • Desktop Publishing
  • Design for 3D Applications
Year 2
Comprises a specialist contextual investigation, and 5 additional specialist units selected from the following topics: Professional Practice, Words and Images, Graphic Image Making, Information Graphics, Design for Advertising, Image Manipulation and Website Design.

Visits to galleries, graphic design agencies and printers are arranged. Professional photographers, illustrators and designers are also invited to give presentations, and to discuss their routes into their chosen careers. One overseas trip is generally planned during the two years of the course.

Assessment Coursework is assessed at regular intervals throughout the course and is internally verified. External assessment is applied to the Final Major Project (FMP), which requires each learner to submit a completed 'project proposal' prior to starting on the practical part of the project. At the end of the second year, students exhibit their work in the End of Year Diploma Show. This is open to the public, prospective employers and local press. Progression
This course will prepare you for employment in the graphic communication industry or for higher level study such as the HND in Graphic Design. Or Degree courses in Photography, Multimedia, Publishing, Fashion Design, Web Design, Packaging Design or TV Design.
