Course programme

Content

Focusing on each student's particular interests, this intensive programme builds on the design skills and knowledge acquired during previous degree studies or professional practice.

You will be encouraged to formulate new methods of design research through a joined-up approach to theoretical and practical investigations.

Learning at this level will be about research, intellectual engagement, discovery, interaction and change. The final product for us is not in itself the goal - it is the research, exploration, evaluation and intellectual understanding of graphic design that makes the MA/PgDip at LCC distinctive.

Structure

The programme is divided into three phases.

Phase 1

Phase 1 involves projects that revisit and develop an understanding of fundamental design principles related to graphic design, typography and the structure of visual communication. You are encouraged to explore multi-disciplinary perspectives and methods of practice and production. The Design Discourse unit also explores current design issues and methodologies, helping you to formulate a personal position relative to the wider social, cultural, professional and commercial context of graphic design.

Phase 2

Phase 2 helps you to develop personal approaches to the subject of graphic design which will inform your contextual understanding and practical methods within the Major Project in Phase 3. Building upon the work undertaken in Phase 1, you will investigate issues central to contemporary design practice such as design authorship and social engagement, new or alternative graphic design tools and techniques, and the relationship between visual form, content and users, through a process of research, experimentation and the practical testing of ideas. Study at this stage of the programme is supported by elective workshops, lectures and group seminars. During this period a self-initiated Major Project proposal is developed with support from your course tutors.

Phase 3

Phase 3 allows for an intensive exploration and development of ideas within the self-initiated Major Project. The testing of ideas in practice, through critical reflection, tutorial guidance, peer review, appropriate industrial collaboration and mentorship is key to the development of the project. This work culminates in the presentation of a practical Major Project outcome together with a supporting Major Project report. Alternatively you may elect to submit a Major Project thesis with supporting practical work.

All three phases of the course are underpinned by a core postgraduate visiting lecture programme from key practitioners and postgraduate staff and workshops in areas such as Letterpress, Printmaking and Photography, together with opportunities to visit museums, galleries and design studios.

Dedication

2 years, part-time.
