Course programme

This course will equip you with the essential skills required to confidently fulfil a professional design brief. It is our “industry masterclass”, providing you with the opportunity to work on a commercial brief, based on your tutor’s specific professional experience.

Whether you are a graduate or already working in industry, this course will help you grow creatively. The pace and workload is increased when compared to Graphic Design - Creative Process and Graphic Design - Concept Development. You will be encouraged to make work that stands out and strengthens your portfolio. Your tutor will share their tips and experiences from working in the world of art, design and visual communication, and will offer clear guidance to help you improve your projects. As with Graphic Design - Creative Process and Graphic Design - Concept Development, this course really focuses on conceptual development and ideas; you'll be encouraged to think laterally and develop work that demonstrates design skills that are both individual and distinctive. You’ll be asked to experiment with photography, collage and illustration in your approach whilst also developing and practising your presentation skills. You’ll utilise simple drawing and rough work to generate ideas quickly and gain confidence to express them clearly.

Computer use is optional on this course and no tuition in software is given. However, you will be advised about design software, and which programs would be appropriate to finalise ideas. Off-site field trips or research visits may also be included. "To receive the maximum benefit from the course, students should allow time to work on their projects between classes. "

Topics covered will include:

  • Typography

  • Branding

  • Publishing

  • Packaging

  • Advertising

  • Film

  • Concept Development

  • Use of Colour and Type

  • Logo Design

  • Layout

  • Image editing

  • Presentation

NB: disciplines will vary, based on your tutor’s professional experience.

Course Outcomes
You will be more confident about responding to real-life graphic design briefs and applying for graphic design roles. You’ll improve your decision making process and will increase your ability to present ideas and concepts effectively. You will leave with strong projects to add your design portfolio that will show your visual thinking, individuality and skills.

Who Should Attend
This course is for those with some graphic design training, or those having completed Graphic Design - Creative Process and Graphic Design - Concept Development, wishing to develop their professional practice. Maybe you're working in industry with little or no formal design training and want to develop your creativity and confidence? Perhaps you feel a little bored with your usual type of design work and need a change? Alternatively, you may be applying for further studies including postgraduate courses in Graphic Design or Advertising?

Please Note – At the end of each course students will be given the opportunity to print their artwork. We will advise students when the work is ready for collection from the college, which should be no more than 1 - 2 weeks following the completion of the course. Work will then be kept for no longer than one month. Please note that we are unable to arrange for the delivery of your work, but would be very happy to prepare this ready for collection should you wish to arrange for a courier.
