What will I study? The NVQ Level 1 training programme includes the following units: Shampooing and Conditioning Drying and Finishing Hair Styles Assisting the Stylist to Perm and Colour Hair Reception Skills Certificate in Nail Treatments Additional qualifications: Key Skills Personal Effectiveness Programme

What else will I do? During your participation in the programmes you will be working commercially in well-equipped salons on members of the public. You will effectively treat clients on a regular basis. Salon management skills are realistically taught along side formal training in practical skills. You will also have the opportunity to attend additional seminars and workshops.

How will I be assessed? There will be a combination of examinations and coursework.

What will I achieve? All successful candidates will achieve the City and Guilds Level 1 qualification. This will allow those who so wish, to gain employment in the hairdressing industry as an assistant to a stylist. In addition to the main qualification, students will also achieve Level 2 Certificate in Nail Treatments, Level 3 certificate in Health and Safety, First Aid certificate, Key Skills awards in Communications, Numeracy and I.T. as well as OCN units in Induction, Work placement and Careers.

What can I do afterwards? Successful students can progress directly into work in a variety of settings, including hairdressing salons, hospitals, and health farms as an assistant to stylists and technicians. Further educational opportunities include attending College to gain a Level 2 Hairdressing qualification to give the successful candidate more scope for work in the hairdressing profession.

Materials required: Each student is required to purchase a tunic for wearing in the salon, a hairdressing kit and a text book. Information on all these items will be provided on request or at interview.

Additional information about this course: During the course students will build a portfolio of evidence to show competence in all areas of practical and theory work. Practical competence will be gained while working in our well equipped salon, alongside level 2 students who will be carrying out all aspects of hairdressing on members of the paying public.
