This course is for you if you wish to begin training to work in the Hairdressing industry.
What are the entry requirements?
You will be assessed on your English and Maths skills at interview. Induction is taken very seriously at this college. You will follow a five week induction programme where your suitability for the level and type of programme they are hoping to be on will be assessed. Successful completion of the induction period will confirm your place on a course.
After applying you will have an interview to determine which course is suitable for your needs and abilities.
- Minimum Literacy Level: Entry 2
- Minimum Numeracy Level: Entry 2
You can read and understand short pieces of writing such as letters, messages, simple stories, timetables and adverts. You can write short pieces of writing - for example an email to a friend, a simple letter, a story or a message.
You can work with numbers, symbols, and simple diagrams. You can add and subtract simple numbers and use simple fractions. You can use money, tell the time, measure things and know about squares, triangles and rectangles.
What qualification will I receive?
Hairdressing NVQ 1.
Where can it lead?
If you are successful you could progress on to Hairdressing NVQ Level 2.
What will I study?
Subjects you will study include: shampooing, conditioning and blow drying, health and safety, reception, neutralising skills and removing colour. Hairdressing with ESOL students will study separate English skills - Cambridge ESOL Skills for Life - all modes. Full-time courses incorporate Literacy, Numeracy and IT.
How will I be taught?
Practical skills will be taught in the college Salon. You will carry out treatments on the general public in the college hairdressing salon. Theory will be taught in the classroom, and you will need to do research for assignments.
How will I be assessed?
Assessments are based on the practical evidence you will produce. Practical work is often supported by written assessments and by oral questions to ensure that essential knowledge has been gained.

Your tutor is there to help and advise you throughout the course, and the College offers a comprehensive range of student services including learning support, language support and guidance.
