Course programme

What You’ll Learn

We will provide you with training and assessment in several areas of Carpentry covering first fix aspects like cutting and laying floor joists and fixing door linings as well as second fix aspects such as hanging doors and fitting skirting and architraves etc. From a joinery point of view we will provide you with an understanding of how to construct and assemble various commonly used joints.

The course is designed to build your skills gradually by providing training on smaller carpentry work and building to the more complex areas as the course progresses.

The areas in which you will be trained on are:

Carpentry

  • Fixing Skirting to a timber background
  • Fixing floor joists and laying flooring
  • Fixing door lining in stud partition or blockwork opening
  • Hanging an internal door
  • Fixing and stabilising trussed rafters
  • Setting out and cutting one pair of common rafters
  • Operating basic wood machines

Joinery

  • Constructing through mortice and tenon
  • Constructing stub mortice and tenon
  • Constructing haunched mortice and tenon
  • Constructing centre bridle joint
  • Constructing dovetail halving joint
  • Constructing through dovetail
  • Constructing double mortice and tenon
  • Constructing shouldered housing
  • Constructing slot dovetail
How You’ll Learn

This 6 weeks of hands on ‘reality’ training will cover all of the basic and essential skills that any Carpenter/Joiner will need in order to provide a competent service to any potential customer. This hands on carpentry and joinery training will see you progress from a novice to a competent Carpenter/Joiner with the course designed to build your skills gradually until the skills become second nature.

Even though you will not be going through a qualification process your progress will be consistently assessed by our qualified Carpentry instructors, giving you the same benefits as someone who might be training with us for qualification purposes.

Courses Open To You After

Able Skills offers a wide variety of Carpentry related courses and whether your requirements are to learn basic skills or to achieve training qualifications or NVQs, we have the training packages available to you. After having completed this course and gained some experience in the industry, it may be that you would like to return to Able Skills to undertake additional training which will help you work towards achieving NVQ level 2 (or even 3).

Additional Info

This course can be covered over a period to suit you and you can train for 6 consecutive weeks, divide your weeks up or even incorporate some weekend training if you have ongoing weekly commitments. At Able Skills we aim to make our qualifications as accessible as is possible and additionally we offer a payment plan which, following a deposit, is on an interest free pay as you train basis.

This is a hands-on, practical carpentry course and you will be involved at every stage and will be participating throughout. It is therefore recommended you bring suitable clothing and for your own safety, steel capped footwear is essential.

Duration & Cost

This is a 6 Week (30 day) course and the cost is £1995.00 including vat. A deposit of £500.00 will secure a booking with the balance payable over the period of the training.
