Course programme

Health and Social Care (BTEC First)
Level: Intermediate Level 2

Awarding Body: EDEXCEL

Course Content:
The course consists of 6 units of work. There are 2 core units - Communication and Individual Rights in Health & Social Care sectors and Individual Needs within Health & Social Care Sectors. There are 4 specialist units, which are likely to be:

1. Vocational Experience in a Health or Social Care Setting*
2. Anatomy and Physiology for Health & Social Care
3. Creative and Therapeutic Activities in Health & Social Care
4. The Impact of Diet on Health
The Health & Social Care course seeks to develop students' awareness of the overall organisation of Health & Social Care in the UK and gives students to opportunity to explore various job roles. In this way the course helps students to consider in detail career paths that are of interest to them in terms of future progression.

*this unit includes 60 hours of mandatory work experience and is recommended.

Teaching Learning Methods:
Throughout the BTEC First course, students will be involved in building up a portfolio of evidence, which will be reflective of their work in all six units. As part of the course, students will undertake a variety of activities including visits, individual research projects, group assignments, seminar presentations and observations. A large amount of research work is required and students are expected to use a number of information sources such as textbooks, official reports, the Internet, CD-ROM, TV and newspapers. There is a 2 week work experience in the Spring Term to underpin the student's knowledge and understanding of Health & Social Care settings.

Key Skills:
In addition to the 6 units of work, students must also develop and show competence in the Key Skill of Information Technology. These skills will be developed in the context of activities related to the 6 vocational units (i.e. A report produced for `The Impact of Diet on Health' may have to be word-processed to demonstrate IT competence).

Assessment:
Assessment for this course is based on the evidence of achievement in the 6 portfolio units of the programme. It is possible to achieve at three levels in the BTEC First Health & Social Care course. Students can achieve a pass, merit or distinction grade.

Skills & Commitment:
Students choosing a BTEC First course need to be organised and able to meet work deadlines. Students are expected to show a level of maturity and be responsible for their own learning.

Progression:
Courses:

BTEC National Diploma in Health & Social Care (not offered at St Charles)
Diploma in Childcare and Education (DCE - formally known as NNEB)
Training:
Kensington Training Centre - NVQ Child Care (Level 2 & 3)
Hammersmith and Fulham Business Resources Ltd - Community Care Training
Aston Training (Ealing) - NVQ Child Care (Level 2 & 3)
Employment:
Opportunities for employment in caring work directly after BTEC First are fairly limited, as many employers require staff to be at least 18. 18 year olds could apply for health care assistant work within hospitals, and very occasionally other hospital jobs arise, such as helpers in physiotherapy or occupational therapy. Opportunities also exist in dental work (e.g. Trainee dental surgery assistant). Those aged 18 and over with experience of work with children could apply for unqualified nanny/parents help positions, some of which will be live-in.

Those with GCSE A - C in double award science will have a wider range of opportunities available, including pharmacy assistant, trainee dispensary technician, dental technician and physiological measurement technician.

NB. The BTEC First qualification in Health & Social Care is not acceptable on its own for entry into nursing training. (GCSE A - C's in several subjects or the National Diploma in Health & Social Care is required)
