Who is this course for?
This course is for you if have an interest in working in health and social care and are looking to do a practical work related course. You might already be working as a carer and wish to gain a formal qualification.

What are the entry requirements?
You will be required to have any of the following equivalents: A good level 1 standard of literacy and numeracy supported by a general education equivalent to 4 GCSEs at grades D-G, BTEC Introductory Diploma Certificate in a related subject and related interests and ideally some related experience. You will also be required to sit an internal assessment and interview. You will also need a reference from your previous school. Induction is taken very seriously at this college. You will follow a five week induction programme where your suitability for the level and type of programme you are hoping to be on will be assessed. Successful completion of the induction period will confirm your place on a course.
After applying you will have an interview to determine which course is suitable for your needs and abilities.
  • Minimum Literacy Level: Level 1

  • Reading: You can read and understand the main points and ideas in different types of writing - for example magazine articles, newspaper stories or short stories. You can understand main ideas from a report, read from a website or college text book, etc. You can use what you have read to help you write an essay or make decisions. Writing: You can present information in different ways. You can use grammar, spelling and punctuation correctly. You can present your thoughts and ideas in a clear way that people can understand.
  • Minimum Numeracy Level: Level 1

  • Interpret Information: You can read and understand tables, charts, graphs and diagrams; read and understand numbers used in different ways; read scales on familiar measuring equipment using everyday units; make accurate observations; identify suitable calculations to get the results you need for your task. Carry out calculations: You can add and subtract, with whole numbers and simple decimals, with or without a calculator; work to the level of accuracy you have been told to use; multiply and divide a simple decimal by a whole number with or without a calculator; understand and calculate simple fractions and percentages; work out the area and volum of rectangular-based shapes; use scale on diagrams; use ratio and proportion; find the average or mean of up to 10 items; find the range for up to 10 items.


What qualification will I receive?
BTEC First Diploma in Health & Social Care which is equivalent to four GCSEs at grades A - C.

Where can it lead?
You may be able to progress to a BTEC National Certificate (level 3) course or go directly into employment.

What will I study?
The first diploma is made up of six units, including communication and individual rights within the health and social care sectors, anatomy and physiology for health and social care, health and social care services, the impact of diet on health, human lifespan development and individual needs within the health and social care sectors. You are also given the opportunity to improve your literacy and numeracy skills via key skills lessons.

How will I be taught?
All the units are taught by experienced tutors with professional Health and Social Care backgrounds. A variety of teaching methods are utilised including, individual study and group work, use of case studies, video, Internet access and role play. As evidence of your work you will be required to produce written assignments, booklets, posters, presentations and leaflets. There are also opportunities for students to access appropriate work experience through the college.

How will I be assessed?
The BTEC First Diploma in Health & Social Care course is assessed via assignments. Two assignments are set externally by the awarding body. The units are graded pass, merit or distinction.

You will have access to a personal tutor to help you throughout the course. The College offers a comprehensive range of student services including learning, language support and guidance.
