Course Overview
An essential aspect of the course is that of work experience. This enables you to decide exactly which area of health and / or social care you wish to pursue.
Visiting speakers are invited to talk about the wide range of jobs within the care sector and you will have an opportunity to visit these environments. Where possible, placements are allocated in your home town. However, in order to obtain specific skills you may need to travel out of your home area.
Course Structure
This is a one-year, full time,nationally recognised level 2 course that introduces you to the world of working within the Health and Social Care professions.
During the year you will undertake vocational practice within Health and Social Care environments.
The course consists of 6 mandatory and specialist units that you will study. These cover many aspects of care, from birth to death, you will also complete:
Appointed Person First Aid
Essential Skills (Lit /Num /IT)
If you have achieved a D grade in GCSE Maths or English, you will be encouraged to re'sit this as part of your college course.
Qualification Aims
With successful completion of this course you could get a job in a Registered Care Home, Housing, Community Work and the Voluntary Sector or Hospitals and Primary Care Trusts. This qualification is equivalent to an NVQ 2 in Care.
Assessments/Examinations
All of the 6 Units have an assignment that must be completed to atleast a Pass Level for successful completion of the course. For progression on to the Society, Health & Development Diploma Level 3, you would be required to achieve an overall merit at Level 2 plus you will need a GCSE grade C in English and Maths.
Cost / Equipment
Tuition is free for 16-19's.
For students who are 19 and over, course tuition is payable for£495 per year. Free tuition is available to those in receipt of certain means tested benefits or to their un-waged dependants.

Requirement
