About this course

Students need to have A-C GCSE grades including Maths English and one science subject. There will be opportunity for GCSE resits for those who wish to retake.

Health & Social Care BTEC National Diploma Level 3

About the course:
This is an 18 unit diploma, tailored to suit those wanting to go into Higher Education in a Health or Social Care related field. Typically those who complete the course choose to go on to nurse training or become social workers. There are also a range of other health related professions that can be studied following the completion of the course. Predominantly there is a substantial amount of science related subjects and those which have been suggested by local universities as conducive to the needs of the industry. Some students will work after completion or take a year out to travel before deciding to embark on a higher education programme. The course is equivalent to 3 'A' levels.

Course Content:
Currently offered are the following topics some of which are mandatory:

Mandatory:

Communication, Equality Diversity and Rights, Health and Safety, Life Stages, Anatomy and Physiology, Personal and Profressional Development, Sociological Perspectives for H&S Care, Psychological Perspectives of H&S Care, Caring for Children and Young People, Supporting and Protecting Adults, Public Health, Physiology of Fluid Balance, Physiological Disorders

Specialist units:

Nutrition, Complementary Therapies, Mobility and Exercise, Human Inheritance, plus Infection Prevention and Control and Dementia Care equivalent to one unit.

Equipment Requirements:
Students need to be equipped with pens and paper and folders or files to store their work. Memory sticks would also be useful.

Assessment:
There are no exams except for Key Skills which all students need to work towards. The main programme is assessed by coursework and assignments internally and externally through the awarding body.

Progression:
Students typically go on to nursing and midwifery or specialis in learning disabilities, mental health, social work and a range of other health and social care professions.
