BTEC Introductory Certificate
Introduction
The BTEC Introductory Certificate is a one year course at level 1 offering you the chance to develop the personal skills and qualities you need for work and learning to help you achieve your full potential.
You can learn these skills in two vocational areas of your choice.
You will also have the chance to develop your English and Maths skills, either through GCSE or Key Skill routes.
Course Content
The course is made up of four units: two core units, which everyone takes, a compulsory Personal Skills unit and one optional unit.
The optional unit enables you to study a particular area in more depth.
All students take these two core units:
  • Starting Work in Health and Social Care
  • Developing Skills in Health and Social Care
Personal Skill unit:
  • Personal Effectiveness
And the following optional unit:
  • Looking After Children
# denotes a unit assessed using an externally set Project Assessment.
Entry Requirements
Students who enter this programme will normally be 16 or older.
You will need to show through experience and at interview that you are enthusiastic and keen to learn new skills.
You will generally have achieved GCSE at grade E â€" G or Entry level 3 qualifications.
You may also need to develop your basic skills in numeracy and literacy, and perhaps be unsure of the vocational area in which you want to work.
Duration
The BTEC Introductory Certificate is a one year course at level 1
For each Certificate, you will study for 180 hours.
Assessment
Your course is assessed on the evidence provided by you, the student.
Evidence consists of work you produce in the form of assignments and projects in which you show you have learned the range of skills set down by BTEC.
Each unit is graded at pass, merit and distinction.
For each vocational area, the first unit is externally assessed by examination.
All other units are assessed internally using the evidence you produce.
Your work will be assessed on a regular basis and you will be given constructive feedback so that you can continually improve your performance.
The Core and Optional units are graded P (pass), M (merit) or D (distinction).
The Personal Skills units are designated pass or fail.
Progression
The course gives you a firm foundation at level 1 to move to a range or vocational studies, including:
Level 2 courses in Childcare, Art, Health and Social Care, IT or other areas.
Work based learning at level 2 in a vocational area of your choice.
You might also choose to move into employment, or to another vocational area at level 1.
If you wanted to continue with your studies you could:
  • take the additional units required for the BTEC Introductory Diploma in Health and Social Care

  • take another qualification at Level 1 in an alternative sector eg. another BTEC Introductory qualification or an NVQ

  • take a qualification at level 2 in the same or an alternative sector eg. a BTEC First Diploma or NVQ
A BTEC Introductory Certificate in Health and Social Care can also prepare you for employment in the Health and Social Care industry.
