BTEC Introductory in Health and Social Care

Course outline
You will study eight units and cover a variety of topics; these are listed below. You will also have the opportunity to take part in health promotion displays, learn some first aid skills and work with professionals in the local area.
Unit 1 Starting work in Health & Social Care
You will explore a variety of jobs in Health and Social Care and the skills that individuals need to perform these. You will also look at different organisations which deliver Health and Social Care.
Unit 2 Working in Health & Social Care
To help you to complete this unit you will go on a work experience placement. You will investigate terms and conditions of employment and procedures to monitor employees.
Unit 3 Developing Skills in Health & Social Care
In this unit you will learn about the practical skills you need for care work. You will look at the different types of care individuals need throughout their life and the importance of communication.
Unit 4 Personal Effectiveness
This unit is completed during tutorial. You will look at the skills you have and ways to improve them. You will write a CV, Personal Statement and practice a job application form.
Unit 6 Financial Management
You will investigate sources of income and plan a personal budget. This unit will give you confidence to manage your money.
Unit 7 Looking After Children
This unit focuses on care of young children you will investigate ways in which children learn, managing behaviour and plan daily care routines.
Unit 8 Images of People
In this unit you will be introduced to the way that society treats groups of individuals. You will challenge stereotypes and find ways of tackling discrimination.
Unit 9 Health and the Environment
You will consider how the environment can affect the health of an individual. You will investigate a local environment and identify risks to an individuals health.

Teaching styles
You will be taught in a variety of ways, theses include: Group work, individual work, teacher led sessions and practical activities. You will also be required to take part in a weeks work experience placement; this is a compulsory element of the course.

Assessment
All coursework, no exams, lots of feedback, improving of coursework.

Subject combinations
Students usually take this course alongside 2 year GCSEs in Maths and English.

Resources and facilities
The Social Science Department has laptops and text books for students to use. Local Health & Social Care organisations will also be important to gain real life examples to complete coursework assignments.

Key features
Regent College has a long history of getting excellent results in Health and Social Care courses. Most BTEC Diploma students in the past have achieved Merit and Distinction grades. Learning support staff are available in some lessons to give students extra help when it is needed and the subject staff are always happy to talk to students both during and outside of lessons. Students usually progress to Level 2 Health and Social Care programmes and find that the BTEC Diploma is excellent preparation for the next step.

Progression
With a Merit, get on to Level 2 (BTEC First), then Level 3 (AS/A2 or BTEC National).
